Ramsey Solutions ~ There is NO “B-Team”
by Kyle Malnati
“Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” –Andrew Carnegie
Do you have a favorite college or professional sports team? If you do, you already know that the experience of seeing your team play live is far more authentic then watching them on TV or listening to a radio broadcast. You know the smell of the popcorn, the buzz of the crowd, and the panoramic views from your bleacher seat. Dave Ramsey might be most popular for his radio broadcasts, financial education video series, and television interviews. However, in each of those mediums, its difficult to see all of the movement behind the scenes.
Every spring and fall season, Dave’s team goes “on the road” for a series of live events. This gives the fans any opportunity for a personal experience with the brand. I’ve personally attended five of Dave Ramsey’s live events since 2015. In each case, the events are a spectacle to be admired, and their success all comes down to a commitment to the team.
I often marvel at the success of Dave Ramsey’s organization, Ramsey Solutions. Dave Ramsey has grown his company from a small startup in his living room to a national brand with over 550+ teammates (you see, out of respect Dave intentionally avoids use the term: employee).
As simple as it may seem, Dave Ramsey’s choice to dub his co-workers “teammates” is critical to their success. Everyone matters.
Last month, Dave’s EntreLeadership team hosted its largest event ever—the EntreLeadership Summit. For four days, more than 1,500 small business owners and leaders gathered at the Omni Dallas Hotel to learn from some of the top leadership and business experts in the country. Their team invited me to Texas to be their special event correspondent and asked me to journal my experiences for YOU!
Dave Ramsey’s stage presence is electric. He is a passionate and gifted presenter, so you would think that there might be a natural “let down” when Dave walks off-stage. To my amazement, his “supporting cast” is consistent with the “main event.”
My takeaway was sincere astonishment the first time I noticed it at their event. I thought to myself, “how can the team be just as excellent as the leader?” Then I began to observe that the excellence was consistent and unwavering.
It not by coincidence that one of the speakers at the 2016 EntreLeadership Summit in Dallas was author, Jim Collins. Collins perfectly identifies this exceptional situation in his book: Good to Great.
“Those who built great companies understand that the ultimate throttle on growth for any great company is not markets, or technology, or competition, or products. It is one thing above all others: the ability to GET and KEEP enough of the RIGHT PEOPLE.” –Jim Collins, Good to Great (page 54)
Therefore, I have settled on one definitive answer to this phenomenon; the “everyone matters” mindset is a driving force of the success experienced at Ramsey Solutions organization.
