Have you ever heard of “Seth Godin?” Just try entering the first name, “Seth” into Google. As of today, there are 135,000,000 results, and Seth Godin is both the 1st and the 3rd result on the first page of that search. The 1st result is Seth Godin’s blog and the 3rd result is his website.
Here is a quick blurb from Seth Godin’s bio on his website:
SETH GODIN is the author of 18 books that have been bestsellers around the world and have been translated into more than 35 languages. He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership and most of all, changing everything. You might be familiar with his books Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip and Purple Cow
I have personally read Linchpin and Tribes. I highly recommend both of those books if you run a business.
Seth Godin delivered an AMAZING presentation about marketing this morning to an audience of 1,500 at the EntreLeadership Summit in Dallas, TX today. Seth’s message to the world could revolutionize the way you operate your business. Here are my notes:
As a marketer, its your job to accurately see what is possible. Being competent and successful often.
Here’s the question to ask anyone working with you: “When along the way did THEY industrialize YOUR job?”
MORE (If you try to sell to everyone, you are intentionally moving yourself towards AVERAGE)
Every industry (including ours) is stumbling.
Example: The “record” industry. That industry was “perfect” in 1972. The old rules of business no longer apply.
Start “courting” your prospects. Turn strangers into friends before you ask them to be clients/customers.
We can earn the privilege of being missed if/when we are gone.
Stop selling to the “normal” – start having conversation with people on the edges. The people on the edge are the ones that are listening.
Different people… hear differently. Its at the edges that we succeed. Otherwise, you are just ANOTHER “anyone.” What is stopping your customer for choosing some other “anyone.”
The major question: “who would miss you when you are gone?”
Uber doesn’t own any cars… they are in the connection business (not the car business).
Here’s how you stand out — GENEROSITY and ART
Everyone in your organization (big or small) is in marketing.
Metcalf’s Law — Any company’s network is depended on its connections. Its about the relationship between your customers (not vendor to customer).
Your customers decide whether you are remarkable or not. People will tell other people about you and your business… but YOU HAVE TO EARN IT.
Be the ONLY one… the one that can’t be replaced.
Steve Jobs – had GRIT. He said NO… we’re not going to be that type of company, we’re not going to market that way, we’re not going to sell the traditional way.
STOP trying to make your product look like everyone else’s. If you refuse to stand out, your customers won’t be with you for long.
A pilot makes HUNDREDS of adjustments as they land your plane.
Enrollment: What is it like to be enrolled in a peer group of likeminded individuals?
Today, everyone has their own media channel and their own microphone.
Connection compounds… we don’t live in a scarcity economy. You don’t have a “limited” amount of widgets that will.
Communicate, Connect, Commit, Culture, Clear, Challenge.
The Beatles did not invent teenagers… they just showed up to lead them.
Leadership isn’t about AUTHORITY… leadership is about choosing to lead.
Leadership is not about saying “this is how we get there;” leadership is about saying, “the destination is over there… now how do we get there?”
What is your BEST work? The ability to make CHANGE.
Be thirsty. Be curious. Notice things.
Kryptonite is the only reason that Superman is interesting… why? because “it might not work” with Kryptonite present in Superman’s world.
Innovation = failing and failing and failing again to find out what finally works.
Leaping into an opportunity is ALWAYS frightening.
Create a working environment for your team-mates that STUNS your competition.
Dancing with FEAR. Seth Godin said, “every time I’m creative; I learn to “dance with fear.” Reminder that your safety mechanisms are preventing your success.”
Resist the urge to fit in… otherwise you’re just another number in the crowd.
Ramsey Solutions hosts an amazing event called: EntreLeadership Summit” once a year. It is a blockbuster business conference with nationally acclaimed speakers. This week’s speaker line up is Seth Godin, Jim Collins, Patrick Lencioni, Dave Ramsey, AND past US President, George W. Bush)
