The Saturday after Thanksgiving has been dubbed, “Small Business Saturday.” The goal is to encourage Americans to do a portion of their Christmas shopping at small businesses on the Saturday between “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday.”
Well, what is a small business? Small businesses are the backbone of our American economy, and they aren’t “SMALL” at all. You might be surprised at some of the statistics compiled in a recent article by Jason Nazar, Contributor to Forbes:
- Over 50% of US workers (120 million individuals) are employed by a small business
- A small business is defined as having fewer than 500 employees
- There are almost 28 million small businesses in the United States
- Small businesses have generated over 65% of the net new jobs since 1995
- Approximately 543,000 new small businesses get started each month

There is no “off switch” for a small business owner as their business is part of the very fabric of their being.

Emilie Rusch of The Denver Post reported in an article today that, Small Business Saturday, is celebrating its sixth year nationwide, with record numbers expected to head out and support their favorite locally owned retailers during the first major weekend of the holiday shopping season.”
I love running a small business and love supporting other small businesses. “Small” should not be looked at as a derogatory term. I would encourage you to think as my friend, Bo Menkiti, does: “Think BIG. Act SMALL.”
